High-Performance Web Site Design Techniques

چکیده
P erformance and high availability are critical at Web sites that receive large numbers of requests. This article presents several techniques—including redundant hardware, load balancing, Web server acceleration, and efficient management of dynamic data—that can be used at popular sites to improve performance and availability. We describe how we deployed several of these techniques at the official Web site for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, which was one of the most popular sites up to its time. In fact, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized the site on 14 July 1998 for setting two records:

Engineering Highly Accessed Web Sites for Performance
This paper describes techniques for improving performance at Web sites which receive significant traffic. Poor performance can be caused by dynamic data, insufficient network bandwidth, and poor Web page design. Dynamic data overheads can often be reduced by caching dynamic pages and using fast interfaces to invoke server programs. Web server acceleration can significantly improve performance a...
متن کاملThe Implications of Visualization Ability and Structure Preview Design for Web Information Search Tasks
This study investigates the effects of users’ visualization ability and Web site structure display design on users’ performance and memory organization in Web site information search tasks using a browsing strategy. A human-centered design—structure preview—was proposed in this study. Structure preview is a Web site navigation menu in which each menu item serves as a link to one Web page, simil...
متن کاملExploring web navigational paths through social network analysis
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to present the network visualization and SNA indicators as a way to explore and to analyse the web site design through the users’ navigational paths. Design/methodology/approach: Web log files from the webometrics.info site were analysed. Web usage mining techniques were used to process these data. Several network graphs (navigational and query graph) were buil...
متن کاملThe Impact of Cluster-Based Web Systems Design on User-Perceived Performance
As the Internet has become more pervasive, many research works have to relay on it. Mostly, an individual access for information is only required and a best effort way of providing such service may be quite enough. However in several computing projects that have been established nowadays, there is urgent need for good and scalable Internet performance as perceived by end users. Web users percei...
متن کاملApplying Web Usability Criteria for Vision-Impaired Users: Does It Really Improve Task Performance?
Available accessibility guidelines do not necessarily guarantee usable web sites, in particular when specific groups of users with special needs are considered. We have identified 15 Web design criteria aiming to provide integrated support of accessibility and usability for vision-impaired users. In this paper, we present the results of a study investigating whether the application of such guid...
